Northeast Ann Arbor gets less attention than Central Campus or downtown, but for a lot of U of M students, it’s the area that fits best. It’s quieter, generally more affordable, and closer to some of the parts of Ann Arbor that don’t get covered in the campus tour.
If you’re looking at apartments northeast of downtown, here’s what to know before you decide.
Where northeast Ann Arbor actually is
Northeast Ann Arbor covers the area roughly bounded by Plymouth Road, Broadway, and the eastern edge of the city. Neighborhoods like Kerrytown-adjacent stretches, the areas around Plymouth, and the Broadway corridor all fall in this zone. It’s north of the medical campus and east of downtown.
For U of M students, this is a common choice for grad students, medical and public health students, and undergrads who want a bit more space and less of the direct campus scene.
What the commute looks like
From northeast Ann Arbor, Central Campus is reachable by U of M’s bus system, by bike, or by car. Bus routes serve most of the northeast corridor with reasonable frequency during the school year. Bike infrastructure has expanded, especially along Plymouth.
North Campus is closer from most of northeast Ann Arbor than Central Campus is, which matters if you’re in engineering, architecture, art and design, music, or any program based on the north side.
Driving is straightforward outside of game weekends and rush hour, but parking on campus is limited and expensive. Most residents in this area rely on transit, biking, or a mix.
What the neighborhood feels like
Northeast Ann Arbor is quieter than the blocks right around campus. You’ll find residential streets, established trees, and neighborhood staples like Zingerman’s Roadhouse-adjacent spots, Broadway restaurants, and the parks along the Huron River. It’s a real neighborhood, not just a housing zone.
For students who want to feel like they live in Ann Arbor, not just at U of M, this is one of the best areas for it.
What to look for in an apartment
A few things matter more here than in the campus core.
Reliable transit access. Being on or near a bus route with frequent service is the difference between a fifteen-minute commute and a forty-five-minute one. Confirm the bus stop location and the route frequency before you sign.
Parking, if you have a car. Northeast Ann Arbor generally has better parking options than the campus core, but not always. Ask about on-site parking and cost.
Pet policy. This area is popular with students who bring pets or want to adopt one. Confirm the building’s pet policy, pet rent, and any breed or size restrictions upfront.
In-unit laundry and internet. Baseline for any modern student apartment. If the building doesn’t offer these, factor in what you’d pay elsewhere.
Who this area is right for
If you want a quieter home base, easier access to North Campus, and a neighborhood that has a life outside of U of M events, northeast Ann Arbor is worth a serious look. If you want to be in the middle of the game day crowd and every event on Central Campus, you might be happier closer in.
